Please choose the ideal date for your school tour from the calendar above. We will contact you to confirm your date or offer alternative dates.
The Project invites educational groups across the state to visit free of charge. Elementary through high school groups are welcome (strictly ages 10 and above / maximum group size is 20). For profit groups or groups that charge an activity fee may use our Group Tour option.
After booking your tour, you will be sent a confirmation email with an attached map to the Wells Petroglyph Preserve. This is the only way to find the preserve as it is not on Google Maps and there is no signage. The preserve is located near Velarde, NM.
Situated on ancestral Tewa land, the Wells Petroglyph Preserve was created in 2007 when Katherine Wells donated 156 acres on Mesa Prieta to The Archaeological Conservancy. The Preserve was later expanded to 181 acres. Katherine purchased the petroglyph-rich land on the mesa in 1992. In 1999 she had the vision for preservation and educational efforts for Mesa Prieta and the determination to develop a program dedicated to its protection. We offer use of our curriculum, "Discovering Mesa Prieta: The Petroglyphs of Northern New Mexico and the People Who Made Them" through the following link: http://mppp1.wordpress.com/Today the Wells Petroglyph Preserve, overseen by The Archaeological Conservancy and managed by the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project, is made available to the public via docent-led tours. Fundraising from the event goes directly to supporting the mission of the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project. MPPP is guided by three core principles: Protection, Scientific Recording, and Education. We rely on your generous support to help us achieve these initiatives, and we can't do it without you. Thank you for your support of the project!
